Make your own photo puzzle: one photo, a detail, a 7.5-second reveal
BEAT AI · MAKE THE MYSTERY
Turn one photo into a guessing game
Choose your own photograph, crop a curious detail, then pass the phone. Your friend gets 7.5 seconds before the whole picture appears.
Free practice. No Beat AI account needed. The tool processes your selected photo on this device; it does not upload or store it. This is a practice game, not a competition entry.
1. Choose a photo you took
Try a leaf, kitchen object or piece of fabric. Use something safe to show a friend, without identifying details.
JPG, PNG or WebP · up to 25 MB. For HEIC, save a JPG copy in your phone's photo app first.
2. Find the interesting detail
Leave one clue: texture, colour or a recognisable curve. Too tight can become impossible.
Choose a photograph to begin.
What is it?
Say your guess before the whole photo appears.
Keep your two puzzle images
Optional: save a generic clue and reveal image to your device. Share only photographs you have the right to share. These downloads remove the original file metadata.
A digital crop is a practice clue. You can also take two separate photographs: one close detail and one wider view.
Ready for another photo challenge?
Choose a dated theme that is still open, then take your own original, non-AI photograph. People vote on eligible matchups.

Take the activity to a group
Our one-page quick-start card has four steps, space for three rounds of guesses and a code that opens this free tool.
Three ways to make a fair puzzle
- Leave some recognisable context. Crop away most of the object, but keep an edge, curve, lettering or familiar texture. If all three answers are pure guesses, widen the crop.
- Keep one useful clue. Let texture, colour or a curve help your friend. Aim for an approachable puzzle rather than a tiny patch nobody can identify.
- Give them time. Hold the detail for 7–8 seconds, then reveal the whole photo.
Try an easier round. Before starting the timer, give your friend three plausible answers. For a pasta photograph, you might ask, “Pasta, rope or shell?” Let them choose before the whole picture appears. A useful clue still needs a clear curve or texture.
Watch one clue become the whole photo
Book, blanket or brick? Make a guess, then watch the same photograph smoothly zoom out from 7 seconds. Printed lettering and a cover edge keep the opening clue approachable.
Spoken question: “A book, a blanket, or a brick? What is your guess?” Genuine public photograph by DomHill, Beat AI’s creator, digitally cropped and animated. AI-generated American narration and original instrumental music. A practice example, with no judging result implied.
- 0–7 seconds: hold one clear detail and show three familiar choices.
- 7–9.5 seconds: smoothly widen the view of that same photograph.
- 9.5–11 seconds: show the whole subject and its answer.
- 11–15 seconds: invite your friend to take a photo of their own.
Try an ordinary subject of your own: a button, a mug handle or a book you have permission to show. Keep a clue such as its edge, curve or lettering. If your friend cannot choose for a reason, show a wider crop.

Making a puzzle video? Let the reveal move.
Hold your close-up steady for the first 7 seconds. At 7 seconds, start a smooth zoom out over roughly 2–3 seconds, so viewers see the detail turn into the whole photograph. Hold the full view briefly before inviting them to try their own original photo.
Use the same photograph throughout the zoom. Keep the opening clue sharp and give three familiar choices. A book cover with part of its printed lettering and an edge visible is fairer than an unrecognisable patch of red. Test the clue on someone unfamiliar with the answer: if they cannot choose for a reason, widen it.
This is a video-making tip. The private practice game above still uses its 7.5-second timer and full-photo reveal.

Changing the crop does not improve the underlying photo's focus. If the detail looks soft, retake a closer photo while staying within your camera's focusing distance.
Ready to try a daily photo challenge?
After practising, choose an open Beat AI theme and take your own original non-AI photograph. The daily challenge is separate from this private puzzle game; people vote on eligible matchups.
